The Nobel prize does seem to be kind of left-leaning. Did Reagan get a Nobel Peace Prize before he died? He would have a been a good candidate for a Nobel
prize, imho.

Reagan did everything he could to escalate the Cold War, essentially pitting us in a dangerous game of "chicken" against the world's other major nuclear power, and showed that he valued the spread of capitalism above human rights with his support of the Nicaraguan Contras. Not exactly the best candidate for a Nobel Peace Prize. At any rate, it's very rare for a sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize; the only two who ever have are Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Carter won it more than two decades after his presidency was over, for his post-presidency work - and he absolutely deserved it. Say what you will about his presidency, but the man has done more to eradicate infectious parasites in Africa than almost anyone before or since. |

Reagan was a master of foreign policy, and even though he took a hardline stance in the Cold War, he actually helped to bring the Cold War to a close
(although, admittedly, Gorbachev deserves much of the credit).

Well, that may have been part of it, but I think Reagan's success came largely through the image he presented to the Soviet leadership. He was an actor,
and he used his skills to project an image of a strong, capable leader who was willing to risk total annihilation in his bid against the "empire of
evil." Under Carter's administration, the Soviets began an unprecedented build-up of arms in order to bridge the gap in the arms race while Carter
promoted the idea of unilateral disarmament. Reagan took an opposite approach from Carter, forcing the Soviets to begin backpeddling.
Truth be told, though, I'm probably on thin ice in nominating Reagan for a Nobel Peace Prize. I'm kind of just grasping at straws and trying to think of a conservative leader who would be a potential nominee for the Peace Prize, and Reagan is the only conservative leader in recent history who I can think of that had a significant (and largely positive) impact on world history. Because I think she did more for peaceful relations between people than anyone else. Granted, there wasn't much peace in her own marriage but she championed causes that most people wouldn't go near with a bargepole, especially royalty. She put her face and love to HIV/AIDS, landmines, homeless people, depression and mental illness, and most causes that society shuns or which carries shame and stigma. She was a beautiful woman inside and out and I loved her. May she rest in peace. *sob* |

Yeah, I was sad to see her go, too, and I was only like 13 at the time. I wouldn't mind seeing her get a Nobel prize, though, if they could be awarded
after death.

Character simply doesn't bring a nation to its knees. Wars and economics and plagues do, but not one man's character. And the Soviet Union collapsed largely for economic reasons. Reagan got lucky. I'd love to see a person go over to Russia and claim that the Soviet Union collapsed because Reagan was FUCKING AWESOME. Let's see how well that claim goes over. |
